Unión Deportiva Las Palmas, founded in 1949, was born from the unity of five smaller clubs on Gran Canaria — a symbol of regional pride and solidarity. As the flagship team of the Canary Islands, Las Palmas brought island football to Spain’s highest level, establishing a legacy of style, skill, and passion that continues to this day.
The club’s golden era came in the late 1960s and 1970s, when under coach Pierre Sinibaldi, Las Palmas became known for its elegant, attacking football. In 1969, they finished as La Liga runners-up, an incredible feat for a team far removed from mainland Spain. Legendary players such as Tonono, Germán Dévora, and Juanito Guedes became heroes to an entire generation.
Though financial struggles and relegations followed, Las Palmas’ spirit never faded. The club has consistently nurtured local talent, producing stars like Vitolo and Pedri, who carried the island’s legacy onto the world stage. Today, at the Estadio de Gran Canaria, every match feels like a celebration of identity and endurance — a reminder that Las Palmas represents not just a club, but the heart and hope of the Canary Islands.
