The Phoenix Mercury, a founding WNBA franchise in 1997, have built a legacy of championships, superstars, and offensive firepower, capturing titles in 2007, 2009, and 2014 behind some of the greatest players in league history. Early years featured scoring legendJennifer Gillomand guardPenny Taylor, but the arrival ofDiana Taurasiin 2004 transformed Phoenix into a perennial contender. Taurasi, the WNBA’s all-time leading scorer and three-time Finals MVP, alongside dominant centerBrittney Grinerand explosive guardCappie Pondexter, powered the Mercury to championships under coachPaul Westhead’sfast-paced system in 2007 and 2009. The 2014 title team, led by Taurasi, Griner, and Taylor, set a then-record for wins in a season while defeating the Chicago Sky in the Finals. Known for high-scoring offenses and star power, Phoenix has remained a playoff fixture through the 2010s and 2020s, with Griner returning to lead the franchise alongside guardsSkylar Diggins-SmithandSophie Cunninghamafter her highly publicized detainment and return in 2023. With Taurasi continuing to add to her legendary career and Griner anchoring the paint, the Mercury carry championship pedigree, iconic players, and one of the WNBA’s most loyal fan bases at Footprint Center as they pursue another title run.
