Austin FC, founded in 2018 and joining MLS in 2021 as the league’s first Texas club outside Dallas and Houston, quickly built a passionate following known as the “Verde” fan base, filling Q2 Stadium with electric atmospheres and vibrant supporter culture. Led by head coach Josh Wolff, Austin endured expansion growing pains in their debut season but rapidly improved behind stars like Argentine playmaker Sebastián Driussi, whose goal-scoring and creativity made him an MVP finalist in 2022. That season marked Austin FC’s breakthrough as they finished second in the Western Conference and advanced to the Western Conference Final, defeating rivals like FC Dallas and Real Salt Lake in dramatic playoff matches before falling to LAFC. Midfielders Diego Fagúndez and Alex Ring provided veteran leadership, while young talents like Owen Wolff added energy and development potential for the future. Off the field, Austin became known for its inclusive culture, vibrant fan base led by the Los Verdes and La Murga supporters’ groups, and community-driven identity that helped transform Q2 Stadium into one of MLS’s most intimidating venues. Despite a challenging 2023 season marked by injuries and roster changes, Austin FC continues to build around Driussi and a growing core with ambitions of returning to playoff contention and capturing the club’s first major trophy.
