The Philadelphia Union, founded in 2008 and joining MLS in 2010, quickly established itself as a club built on player development, defensive solidity, and a passionate supporter base led by the Sons of Ben at Subaru Park. Early years featured forward Sebastien Le Toux, the club’s first star and all-time leading scorer for many seasons, who carried the team to its first playoff appearance in 2011. After initial ups and downs, the Union transformed into an Eastern Conference powerhouse under coach Jim Curtin, with a system emphasizing homegrown talent from the club’s academy, producing U.S. internationals like Brenden Aaronson, Mark McKenzie, and goalkeeper Zack Steffen. Veterans like captain Alejandro Bedoya provided leadership, while striker Kacper Przybyłko and midfielder Jamiro Monteiro added attacking quality during playoff runs. The breakthrough came in 2020 when Philadelphia captured the Supporters’ Shield for the league’s best regular-season record behind goalkeeper Andre Blake, a two-time MLS Goalkeeper of the Year, and rising star Kai Wagner anchoring the backline. In 2022, the Union reached the MLS Cup Final after a dominant season led by forwards Julián Carranza and Mikael Uhre, falling to LAFC in a dramatic penalty shootout. Known for combining youth development with competitive success, Philadelphia continues to challenge for trophies while building one of MLS’s most consistent and sustainable clubs.
