The Portland Timbers, founded in 2009 and joining MLS in 2011, carry one of the league’s most passionate fan bases, the Timbers Army, and a history featuring championships, legendary players, and a unique soccer culture at Providence Park. The early MLS years saw Portland develop rivalries with Seattle and Vancouver in the Cascadia Cup, while forward Darlington Nagbe became the club’s first star with his skill and creativity. Under coach Caleb Porter, the Timbers captured their first MLS Cup in 2015, defeating the Columbus Crew with goals from Diego Valeri and Rodney Wallacewhile goalkeeper Adam Kwarasey delivered key playoff performances. Valeri, nicknamed “El Maestro,” became the face of the franchise, winning league MVP in 2017 as Portland remained perennial contenders alongside midfielder Diego Chara, whose leadership and defensive dominance anchored the midfield for over a decade. The Timbers reached the MLS Cup Final again in 2018 and 2021, narrowly falling to Atlanta United and New York City FC, while winning the 2020 MLS is Back Tournament during the pandemic. Recent years have featured attackers like Sebastián Blanco and striker Felipe Mora, with Portland continuing to blend South American flair, playoff drama, and one of MLS’s most electric home atmospheres in pursuit of another championship.
